In response to recent changes affecting the Furniture Design / Wood program at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts
Recent decisions at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts have paused admissions to the Furniture Design concentration and reduced dedicated faculty support for wood-based study.
Why this matters…
Wood is not only a discipline within craft. It is a foundational material that supports tools, processes, and knowledge across glass, fiber, ceramics, and metal.
Material-specific study provides the depth that makes interdisciplinary work meaningful. Without it, both technical rigor and conceptual clarity are diminished.

We, the undersigned artists, designers, educators, students, alumni, and supporters of the craft field, write to express our deep concern regarding the recent decision to pause graduate admissions to the Furniture Design concentration within the Craft/Material Studies graduate program and the non-renewal of the wood program’s sole full-time faculty member….
